This product is available for download to all registered users of Software Subscription Services for eComStation. For more information, please visit: http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

The second Technology Preview of the Flash 10 Plugin wrapper for eComStation is intended to show the progress of this product and to give you an early experience of being able to use websites implementing the latest Flash content.

The official Flash 5 included with eComStation is outdated and does not support video playback. The unofficial Flash 7/9 release which can be found on the internet does not work on a lot of websites as it identifies itself as Flash 9 but can only display Flash 7 content.

With the new release of Flash 10 up-to-date Flash support for eComStation is provided. This release also supports proper rendering of Flash 10 text elements and Flash keyboard input works.

Notes:

• This code should not be used on production systems. See the readme document for details.
• This release requires eComStation 1.2, 1.2R or eComStation 2.0 GA.
• This release requires an installed version of Odin, which can be obtained from the same download location as the Flash 10 package.
• Feedback can be provided via http://svn.ecomstation.nl/flash10 Please follow the guidelines on what steps are needed in order to properly report a bug.

About the Flash standard: Flash content is used on a lot of websites. Some websites require Flash support to login with your user credentials. Also a lot of popular websites have video files online in the Flash format.

VirtualBox for OS/2 and eComStation Project Started

Silvan Scherrer has started a new project to port the latest VirtualBox to OS/2 and eComStation and provide a current, usable virtualization solution. VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Early versions of VirtualBox had already been ported to OS/2 but these efforts had been suspended due to technical problems and lack of the Qt 4 library for the GUI. With the Qt 4 library and the lastest GCC compiler available, basic obstacles have been removed and a first success can already be reported: The support driver works and a DOS guest can be booted.

A team of several developers will work on the project and funding will be provided by the OS/2 and eComStation community. If you would like to contribute to this port, you are welcome to buy sponsoring units at the Mensys online shop

Java for OS/2 and eComStation Project Started

Silvan Scherrer has started a new project to port the latest Java to OS/2 and eComStation. Java is a very popular sophisticated programming environment. Applications written in the Java language are run inside a virtual machine (Java Virtual Machine, JVM) which provides a nearly identical behavior on all platforms that have a JVM implementation available. This "write once, run anywhere" approach means that developers can support a multitude of platforms while only having to maintain one code base. For users, availability of a current Java for OS/2 and eComStation means access to a huge number of existing applications.

Previously, Java had been made available for OS/2 and eComStation by IBM, Golden Code and Innotek. However, new versions with many changes and improvements have been released since then and current applications require a current JVM implementation. The new project will port such a current JVM to OS/2 and eComStation. Dmitry Kumenov, who is well-known for his work on the Qt 3 and 4 ports, has been hired as chief developer. Funding is provided by several companies and individuals, with Mensys BV being the main sponsor.
